Danielle Morrill

I do growth for developer products. I also write the code.

First marketing hire at Twilio. Cofounder and CEO at Mattermark. Growth at GitLab. Today I am the entire engineering team at my own company, and I have merged 3,315 pull requests this year doing it.

The unusual part

Marketing people who can ship are rare. I have been one since 2009.

I do not have a computer science degree, and I never held a job titled engineer until I gave myself one. What I have is a long, checkable record of writing code in public, starting the week I took a marketing job at an API company.

2009

Twilio hired me to do customer support, blog posts, and video. I wrote the demo apps myself, in PHP. The Trick-or-Treat Hotline took twenty minutes and about a hundred lines; the international calling card app I built for two houseguests ran on the company blog as a tutorial.

The Trick-or-Treat Hotline → A calling card in 20 minutes →

2010

Launched Twilio SMS. I ran the launch and made the screencast that went with it.

2013

Wrote, in public, that I was done being a marketing person who dabbles: "Now I write code 50% or more of my time, and it has to work." The same post admits I asked for a senior title on my business card at Twilio so I could get meetings, and then spent three years earning it.

I Don't Do That Job Anymore →

2021

Took the CTO seat at Firstparty, a developer-first marketing analytics company, and shipped the product with one other engineer.

Now

I am the entire engineering organization at Groupthink: a Laravel API, a Next.js web app, an Electron desktop app, an iOS app, and a marketing site. I direct Claude Code agents running in parallel git worktrees, review what they write, and run the post-deploy checks against production myself.

The full story, with the numbers → How the agents are set up →

This page is part of the evidence. The site you are reading is a Laravel 12 app I wrote, server-rendered Blade, no JavaScript framework, deployed on merge. The pull request figures above are pulled from GitHub every day, so this resume cannot quote a number that has gone stale.

The record

Where I have worked, and what happened

2023 — now

Groupthink

Founder and CEO, and the entire engineering team

Relationship intelligence for people who run on meetings. I write, review, and ship all of it, alone, with AI agents.

  • Took engineering throughput from 15 merged PRs in January 2026 to 707 in August. September passed that in three weeks. The record with a team of five was 287.
  • Took all-in cost per merged pull request from $430 to $42 in August. Monthly burn fell from $104K to about $30K.
  • Repositioned the company in March 2026 from a meeting notetaker, a category Google and Zoom commoditized, to a relationship intelligence platform.
  • Run the whole company as markdown in git (strategy, decisions, runbooks) so an agent can read it.

2021 — 2023

Firstparty

Cofounder and CTO

Developer-first marketing analytics, built with Jonathan Kressaty.

  • Funded within 48 hours of tweeting about the idea; raised a $5.7M seed in 2022.
  • Owned engineering as CTO. We never found product/market fit and pivoted rather than coast; the pivot became Groupthink.

2019 — 2021

GitLab

GM of Meltano, then Senior Director of Growth Marketing

Ran an internal startup, then the growth team, reporting to the CEO for the first year.

  • Ran Meltano as an internal startup, hired my own replacement, and it spun out with a $4.2M seed led by GV.
  • Built the growth marketing team. Left shortly before the IPO.

2013 — 2017

Mattermark

Cofounder and CEO

The deal intelligence company, started with the $350K left in the previous startup's bank account.

  • Union Square Ventures was the first paying customer. Revenue reached about $3M ARR and the team peaked at seventy.
  • Wrote the Mattermark Daily to 100,000 readers, which was the top of the funnel for years.
  • Sold to FullContact in December 2017. The sale did not clear preferences, so common stock, mine included, went to zero. I stayed six months at the acquirer to land the plane, and wrote about all of it.

2012 — 2013

Referly

Founder and CEO

Y Combinator, Summer 2012.

  • Raised $1M and grew to ten people. The idea was wrong, so we killed it instead of running a zombie.

2009 — 2012

Twilio

First marketing hire, through Director

Joined when the company was working out of borrowed office space.

  • Ran marketing to developers through Twilio's first 100,000 customers.
  • Built the team from zero to eighteen people over three years, including the developer evangelists. Started the customer success team.
  • Worked the hackathon circuit with the evangelists, TechCrunch Disrupt included, and spoke at developer events.
  • Launched the Twilio Conference and the Twilio Fund.
  • Hired Twilio's first international employee, a developer evangelist in London, and did evangelism across Europe myself.
  • Launched Twilio SMS, and wrote the demo apps and screencasts that sold it.
  • Forbes 30 Under 30.

2007 — 2009

Pelago (Whrrl)

Data team

First startup job, collecting and cleaning the place data behind a location-based social app. Events editor at Seattle 2.0 on the side.
